Civil rights leader, activist, and American icon Rev. Jesse Jackson has been hospitalized, according to an announcement from the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the organization he founded in 1969. Jackson, 84, is experiencing complications from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) — a rare neurological condition affecting movement, balance, and eye coordination.

Jackson has been living with PSP for nearly a decade. He was originally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease before receiving the PSP confirmation in April. The organization reports that he is under medical care and observation, and they are requesting continued prayers and support from the community.

Rev. Jesse Jackson is one of the most influential civil rights leaders of our time — a protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a national spokesperson for justice, and a champion for equity around the world. His leadership through the Civil Rights Movement, voter registration efforts, political advocacy, and humanitarian missions has cemented his legacy as a global force for change.
