The city of Atlanta had a historic win last year as Keisha Lance Bottoms was the second women elected as mayor. The race was tight but Bottoms came out on top and she couldn’t be more humbled by her position and all the work she’s been able to get done in such a short time.
“I wake up everyday and I pinch myself and I go, ‘now whose life is this again,’ expressed Bottoms. “It’s such a blessing and just fulfilling beyond belief.”
Transitioning into a new position is sometimes tough but Bottoms was pleasantly surprised at how at home she feels in the job. “Coming from city council was extremely helpful and having a legal background,” explained Bottoms.
In the first few weeks on the job, Bottoms was able to bring much-needed change that was close to the hearts many Atlanta citizens.
“The biggest thing that we pushed through was criminal bail reform. And we did that within the first few weeks in office. So now in the city of Atlanta you don’t stay locked up in our city jail simply because you can’t afford to get out,” explained Bottoms. “That was huge for the community for so many reasons because how many of us know someone whose been stopped for something simple.”
