In what is nothing short of a heartbreaking and tragic head scratcher, authorities are investigating the targeted shooting of 15-year-old Brian Jasso who was helping his step-dad deliver newspapers.
The incident happened on Sunday morning on Chicago’s Southwest side around 6:49 a.m. in the 5100 block of West 47th Street in the city’s LeClaire Courts neighborhood, according to authorities.
According to reports by the Chicago Tribune, the shooter was driving a white vehicle, and rear-ended the car carrying the teenager and his stepfather before pulling alongside the pair and opening fire, police said. The teen was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
Jasso was from the 6100 block of South Whipple Street. At the time of the shooting, newspapers were inside the car. Some reports allude to the shooting being a case of mistaken identity, but no one has been arrested as of this writing and an investigation is still in progress.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department said, “Right now we’re trying to retrace the steps leading up to this tragic shooting.”
The teen’s stepdad, according to the Tribune report, is a longtime newspaper carrier for a distribution company in the city that contracts with Tribune parent company Tronc for delivery services, a Chicago Tribune spokeswoman confirmed. The man works as an independent contractor and typically delivers the Chicago Tribune as well as other newspapers, including the Chicago Sun-Times and New York Times, officials said.
“We are saddened and stunned by this news,” said Bruce Dold, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Tribune. “Our hearts go out to the family of the young man who was killed.”
