NBA legend Elgin Baylor’s memoir Hang Time: My Life In Basketball covers his life from his days as a Washington D.C. playground legend to when he became a pioneer in the NBA.

Colin Kaepernick is lauded for his courage to stand up for his beliefs, but before Kaepernick could take a knee, players like Baylor, navigated the country’s racial tension and fought against racism back in the 1960s.

The 11-time NBA All-star shared a bit of his story on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Check out the interview below to hear about his act of protest:
