Authors Collective 2024 - Radio One ATL

Description:

“Dramatic, daring, and authentic, Jelani’s Key is a page-turning epic chock full of culture, history, and all the things that will enlighten and inspire young readers.”

—Kwame Alexander, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Door of No Return Trilogy

Ta-Ta was now among the ancestors. But he left his grandson, Jelani, a golden key and a note bearing a cryptic riddle—“find Karakhamun.” Mourning his late grandfather, and with little else to go on, now 11-year-old Jelani must set off on his own to fulfill Ta-Ta’s mysterious wishes.

His quest will put him on a collision course with a legendary neighborhood bully and immerse him in a mind-bending overnight challenge that, if navigated successfully, will unveil his grandfather’s true legacy and change Jelani’s life forever.

In honor of the planned 2025 opening of Karakhamun’s burial site in Egypt, 25% of the proceeds of Jelani’s Key will go to the ASA Restoration Project, a non-profit tax-exempt organization. For more information, visit the IKG Cultural Resource Center.

Bio: Growing up in Asheville, NC my weekdays were filled with school and sports. Being a PK (Preacher’s Kid), my weekends were filled with church. In between I loved to read. Though I enjoyed the adventure in classics like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, I had an unrelenting thirst for books about African Americans. There were very few and those that I did find were very stereotypical.

Writing at this stage of my life is purpose driven. My intent is to rejuvenate an interest in some and create an awareness in others of little and well known facts and heroes of African Diaspora. My stories educate and have the potential to tear down cultural barriers. I look forward to creating the types of stories young people desire and parents and educators yearn for. Following graduation from Tennessee State University in 1982 I headed ‘off into the wild blue yonder’ as an airman in the United States Air Force. I was able to put my Recreation Administration Degree to good use in fitness, social recreation, and athletics. I am most proud of being a Desert Storm veteran and my time as Director of Youth Programs. It is those experiences that I draw from when developing stories, characters and scenes.

In 2015, I retired from the U.S. Forest Service with over 30 years federal service. Since then I have devoted my time to writing children’s picture books.

Emyerz (Edward B. Myers),  a Fine Artist, Furniture Designer and Poet dedicated his life to the profession of Art and Design for 40 years. For 15 of those years, he ran a successful Custom Interiors & Furniture Design business: Lux Mezzo in Atlanta, GA.

His professional creative progression turned from Master Upholsterer and Furniture Maker towards a more art centric approach creating ‘sculptural furniture’ where each unique piece carries its own narrative.

Construction components derive from recycled wood, furniture parts or found objects; repurposed as utilitarian art, he began producing mixmedia artwork.

Subsequently, Lux Mezzo furniture morphed into Emyerz Art + Design which achieved success selling his furniture and mixmedia painting series: Quasi Cubiste, Afrikan Kurrents and Mineyez. His Collectors continue to acquire his work.

In efforts to reach a broader audience, a brief stay in Los Angeles and frequent excursions to New York, Emyerz moved to Brooklyn where he lived for the last five years of his life.

Most notably in January 2015 he was a part of the New York City Parks’ Ebony Society’s group exhibit, The Great Migration, at the Arsenal Gallery Central Park and subsequently the 2016 exhibit: America: The Legacy of African American in Public Service.

Emyerz has also self-published a collection of love poems titled: When Beauty Whispers, distributed through Lulu Publishing. EMyerz, transitioned to the universal realm, July 20, 2021, after a heroic battle with cancer. He leaves a legacy of ethereal artistry and an extensive body of work that is maintained by his estate executors, AJ Favors (Life Partner/Soulmate) and Jonell Myers Williams (Sister/Soulmate).
